Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. What is a country calling code?

    A. A country calling code is the 1–3 digit prefix assigned by the ITU (E.164 plan) that you dial before a foreign number, such as +1 for the US and Canada, +44 for the UK or +81 for Japan.

  • Q. How do I dial an international number from a mobile phone?

    A. Press + (hold the 0 key), then the country code and the number without its domestic leading 0. The + works from any country, so you do not need to know the local exit code.

  • Q. What exit code do I dial from a landline?

    A. It depends on where you are calling from: 011 from the US and Canada, 00 from the UK and most of Europe, 0011 from Australia. The exit code replaces the + sign.

  • Q. Why do several countries share +1 or +7?

    A. +1 is the North American Numbering Plan, used by the US, Canada and many Caribbean and Pacific territories, so the 3-digit area code tells them apart. +7 is shared by Russia and Kazakhstan.
