Typing Speed Test

Copy real sentences for 15, 30 or 60 seconds and get your WPM and accuracy, with typos marked live.

How it works

  • Choose 15, 30, or 60 seconds and start the test.
  • Copy the sentence on screen. Once you've typed as many characters as it has, the next one appears, typos and all.
  • Only correctly typed characters count toward your speed. WPM = correct characters ÷ 5, per minute.
  • Use your regular keyboard in English layout. Pasting is disabled.

Pick a 15-, 30-, or 60-second round and copy the sentences on screen as fast as you can. Your speed in words per minute (WPM) updates live while you type, correct letters turn green and typos turn red, so you can see exactly where your fingers slip.

Only correctly typed characters count toward your score: WPM is correct characters divided by five, per minute — the standard "five characters = one word" convention. Typos don't add speed, and they still count against your accuracy even if you go back and fix them. A sentence moves on once you've typed as many characters as it has, so rushing past mistakes simply costs you points.

For reference, a 2018 Aalto University study of about 168,000 volunteers measured an average of 52 WPM on physical keyboards; a follow-up study of roughly 37,000 people found an average of 36 WPM on phones. Your best score for each mode is saved in your browser, each mode has its own leaderboard, and you can send a friend a link that challenges your score. Sentences follow the site language, so switching languages gives you practice on another keyboard layout.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. How is WPM calculated here?

    A. WPM is the number of correctly typed characters divided by five, per minute. Wrong characters add nothing to your speed.

  • Q. How is accuracy calculated?

    A. Accuracy is correct characters ÷ every character you entered. A typo still counts against you even if you erase and retype it.

  • Q. What is an average typing speed?

    A. A 2018 Aalto University study of about 168,000 volunteers found an average of 52 WPM on physical keyboards. Scores above 70 WPM are well above that average.

  • Q. Can I take the test on my phone?

    A. Yes. Expect a lower number: an Aalto University study of about 37,000 mobile users measured an average of 36 WPM on phones.
